Athletic Club Draw Tenerife In Copa Del Rey 4th Round
Athletic survived a scare earlier this week after being taken all the way to penalties by Elche. In the end, the Basques managed to win the shootout 5-4 and advance to the fourth round of the Copa del Rey. Following easy wins over Intercity and Sestao River, the trip to Estadio Martínez Valero was a wakeup call for the Zurigorri.
Gaizka Garitano has warned that each round will become more difficult. With the new format giving smaller teams a more realistic chance to win games, several Primera clubs have already been eliminated. Athletic will face yet another challenging fixture next week after being matched against Tenerife in Friday’s fourth round draw.
Athletic have faced Tenerife 26 times throughout history and never in the Copa del Rey. The Basques have won 13 of those meetings, including a 4-1 victory at San Mamés the last time the two met back in February of 2010. This time, Athletic will travel to Heliodoro Rodríguez López where they lost 1-0 in their last visit to the island.
Tenerife currently sit 17th in the Segunda table but have done well in the cup. Following wins over Mensajero and Rayo Majadahonda, Tenerife defeated Real Valladolid 2-1 just a few days ago to earn their place in the fourth round. The match between Athletic and Tenerife will take place next week between Tuesday and Thursday with the winner advancing to the quarterfinals.
