Unai López “We Deserved More”
Unai López was back in the starting lineup on Sunday as Athletic hosted Celta Vigo at San Mamés. The midfielder had been dropped for the likes of Mikel Vesga in recent league matches but played well as Athletic picked up a point in the 1-1 draw at the Cathedral. While a point is valuable, the result felt more like a defeat because the Basques had several opportunities to score and win the game.
“We deserved more,” López told Athletic TV after the match. “We had occasions to score more goals and win. Today it wasn’t meant to be, but the team played well and we showed our faces. We created many chances and we will win many games if we continue to play like this.”
Moving forward, the 24-year-old says that Athletic will have to start finishing their chances if the team wants to continue fighting for Europe. Sunday’s draw was a disappointing result but López believes Athletic can build on the strong performance.
“If you want to be up in the table you have to put finish chances. In football it doesn’t matter how well you play, but if you win or lose. The result hurts, although we didn’t play a bad game. We tried until the end, but the ball didn’t want to go in today. It’s not the result that we were looking for but we have to keep the same attitude. There were three vital points on the table, but sometimes games come out like this.”
Unfortunately, Unai López won’t be available for Athletic’s next match against Espanyol after being shown his fifth yellow card of the season in the draw with Celta. López will be forced to serve a one game suspension but could can play in Wednesday’s Copa del Rey fixture against Elche.
