Iker Muniain Makes 400th Appearance With Athletic Club
Iker Muniain made his return to the starting lineup in Sunday’s match against Celta Vigo and, in the process, also made his 400th appearance for Athletic. The captain played the entire game and had a number of chances to score, including one free header in the box that was miraculously saved. In the end, Athletic only managed a 1-1 draw but Muniain says the team should be proud of their performance.
“There’s nothing negative to be said about the team,” he told reporters after the game. “We have seen a great Athletic, with a lot of rhythm and energy, and always looking for victory. We must leave with out heads up although when you fail to win you aren’t happy at all. It was a good opportunity to cut the lead from those ahead of us because they had dropped points. We must be encouraged.”
The 27-year-old was pleased with how many chances Athletic created, though the Lions struggled to finish in front of goal. In the end, Muniain says that team never gave up and fought until the final whistle.
“We had many chances and the wings constantly put the ball into the box.. In the first half we had chances to go ahead, although they had a clear one as well. In the second half they went ahead but there was still half an hour left and the games at San Mamés are very long. We were able to draw because we went for the game, but the second goal didn’t come.”
Despite the unfortunate result, Sunday’s match was a major milestone for Muniain who became the youngest player to reach 400 appearances. “It’s an honor to be able to reach this number with this shirt, which is what I’ve always wanted,” he said. “Doing this with Athletic makes it even more special.”
