Elche Request Permission To Field Andoni López In Copa Del Rey Match Against Athletic
Athletic will play a rematch of the 1969 Copa del Rey final later this month after being drawn against Elche for the Round of 32. The Basques won the title 51 years ago, defeating Elche 1-0 at the Santiago Bernabéu, and the two clubs have maintained a very good relationship over the decades. Athletic have sent a number of players on loan to Estadio Martínez Valero and the teams nearly faced off in a friendly over the summer.
Players like Unai Simón and Urtzi Iriondo have been sent on loan to Elche in the past and Andoni López was added to the list over the summer. The left-back has already featured in 10 games for Los Franjiverdes despite not having earned a starting role and would love the opportunity to face Athletic in the cup fixture. However, the loan agreement doesn’t allow López to play against the Lions.
Taking the field against Athletic would be a perfect opportunity for López to show Athletic and manager Gaizka Garitano his best level as he seeks to secure a place in the team after returning from loan. For now the 23-year-old won’t be able to face his boyhood club, but Elche are hoping to change that. According to a report from Monserrate Hernández of AS, Elche have requested permission from Athletic to field López in the cup match.
Athletic have yet to give an answer and there isn’t much time left with the match scheduled for next Wednesday. The Basque giants could choose to not enforce the clause but for now Elche are preparing as though Andoni López will be unavailable.
