Kenan Kodro “I Hope To Be At Athletic For Many More Years”
It’s been nearly one year since Kenan Kodro joined Athletic on the final day of the transfer window. Since the move the striker has made 17 appearances for the Basques, scoring two goals, and has played well in his limited minutes. This season, Kodro has seen the field six times and hopes to have more chances in the months ahead.
“The opportunities come when you least expect it,” Kodro said in an interview with Fuera de Juego. “The beginning of the season was very complicated for me, but you have to be prepared because everything can change very quickly.” Looking back on his first 12 months at San Mamés, Kodro is happy with his decision to join the club.
“I have a very positive view of my first year with Athletic. I would have liked to play much more, but I know the competition that I have in my position. The decisions of the coach don’t depend on me. I’ve had to wait but it’s been a beautiful year. I hope to be at Athletic for many more years.”
Kodro started Athletic’s last two league games against Real Madrid and Sevilla and scored in both, though the goals were ruled offside. “I felt sorry for the two goals being offside,” he admitted. “You don’t have to give it much importance, but it’s true that scoring those would have earned points and changed my status in the team.”
Strong performances with Athletic could see Kodro make a return to international football. “Going back to the Bosnian National Team is one of my short-term goals. It will depend a lot on my situation at Athletic, but it would be a dream to be in the playoff, win it, and be able to play in the European Championship at San Mamés”
In addition to fighting for European qualification, Athletic are confident that they have the quality to compete for the Copa del Rey title this season. The Lions have been drawn with Elche for the Round of 32 and Kodro warns that the team can’t take the match lightly.
“We are going for everything in the Cup. We already played in Elche recently, against Intercity, and we know that it will be a very difficult game. Elche are doing well in the Segunda and we have to go with the utmost seriousness, but we are favorites. This club has done great things in the cup. Why can’t we dream of something nice?”
Kodro has benefited from Aritz Aduriz’s hip injury over the past few months, as has Asier Villalibre. The two strikers been competing with each other for minutes which has left Garitano with difficult decisions to make. “Villalibre and I want the best for each other,” said Kodro. “We are prepared for when the opportunity comes and we are at the service of the team. Asier is very excited and hungry. He’s a talented young player.”
This weekend Athletic will host Celta Vigo at San Mamés and the manager will have several options to choose from to lead the attack. Kenan Kodro could keep his place in the starting lineup, though the return of Iker Muniain could once again see Raúl García moved into the striker role. Either way, Athletic are in need of a big win at home to add three points and keep pace in the race for Europe.
