Basconia Soar Up The Table With Seven-Game Unbeaten Streak
Success did not come quickly for Basconia this season. Tasked with incorporating many new players into the team and finding the right balance, new manager Patxi Salinas faced a difficult challenge. Throughout the first few months Basconia struggled to score goals or win games and soon fell to the bottom half of the table.
With time Basconia began to hit their stride and were firing on all cylinders by the middle of November. Sunday’s draw against Sodupe was the team’s seventh straight game without a loss and the impressive streak has seen Basconia soar up the table. At this point, the Basauritarras sit sixth in the standings and are just two points off of the top four.
The unbeaten streak began with wins over Cultural Durango, Tolosa, and Lagun Onak where Basconia scored six goals and conceded just once. After a 1-1 draw with San Ignacio the team picked up victories against Ariznabarra and Somorrostro, followed by the draw over the weekend, and kept clean sheets in all three games.
Youssouf Diarra, Aitor Paredes, Jon Cabo, Xabier Arberas, Mikel Kortazar, and several others have played important roles in the team’s success over the past few months while the manager has found ways to get the very best out of his players. Starting with a strong defensive base, Salinas has brought stability which has helped the team make significant improvements in other important areas as well.
If Basconia continue to play at such a high level a top four finish is very possible, though the team wouldn’t be able to compete for promotion unless Bilbao Athletic were to earn their own promotion to the Segunda. Either way, Basconia are well on their way to having an incredible season with many young stars proving they will be ready to take the step up to Bilbao Athletic in the summer.
