Unai Simón To Miss Celta Vigo Match With Mumps
A number of Athletic players were unavailable for Saturday’s Copa del Rey match against Sestao following a flu outbreak which struck the team throughout the week. While a handful of players recovered in time to make the squad, other weren’t so fortunate. Unai Simón was one who was forced to miss the fixture, though his situation was different than his teammates.
“Unai has mumps and will not be able to leave home for four or five days,” Gaizka Garitano told reporters after the game. Being unable to train throughout the week, and likely longer depending on the recovery, means that Simón will almost certainly be unavailable for Sunday’s league match against Celta Vigo and possibly others. “We will see how long his recovery takes,” answered the manager when asked.
With Simón essentially ruled out for the match Iago Herrerín will take his place in the starting lineup. Normally, Jokin Ezkieta would serve as the backup goalkeeper but the 23-year-old also missed the cup fixture with the flu which meant that Ander Iru was on the bench and could do so again this weekend. However, Iru would also be needed at Bilbao Athletic were that to be the case. With an entire week to prepare for Celta Vigo the hope is that the squad will have plenty of time to recover and be available to the Mister.
