Iñigo Lekue “It Was A Nice Game With A Great Atmosphere”
Iñigo Lekue has made just 7 appearances so far this season but has played well with each opportunity. On Saturday, the 26-year-old came on late in the second half and provided a beautiful assist for Yuri Berchiche to score the final goal as Athletic routed Sestao River 4-0 at Las Llanas. After the match, Lekue spoke to the media and shared his excitement over the victory.
“We were concentrated from the beginning and we are very happy with the game that we played,” said the Lezama product. “We have fulfilled what we had to do from the beginning with our positioning, intensity, and without relaxing. It was a nice game with a great atmosphere.”
It’s been difficult for Lekue to have minutes this season but he’s determined to convince the manager and earn more chances. “I can’t be happy with how much I’m playing but I try to contribute every day and every time I go out onto the field,” he admitted. In th end, the competition in the squad has made everyone better.
“There are many players on the left and the coach has a thousand variants there. Those of us who have had fewer minutes always want to play every game. We see this is an opportunity and when we play we are able to push the team and that makes everyone better. The important thing is that the team does well and everyone contributes.”
Although he hasn’t been a starter this season Iñigo Lekue’s versatility has made him an invaluable weapon for Garitano. Capable of playing on either side of the defense and at both wing positions, Lekue has the confidence of the manager and will continue to have chances moving forward.
