Joseba Etxeberria “This has been a great experience for our players”
Athletic U23 put in an impressive performance on Wednesday, defeating Liverpool 2-1 in the final match of the group stage of the Premier League International Cup. Had the Kumeak won by at least two goals they would have advanced to the next round, but instead have been eliminated following a loss to PSG and draw with Wolves. Athletic may have been knocked out, but manager Joseba Etxeberria was very happy with the tournament.
“This has been a great experience for the players,” he said on the club’s website. “Despite not being able to advance to the next round we have competed well in three games. These games also allowed us to give minutes to players who were participating less and also some of those from Basconia.”
The tournament provided an opportunity for many Lezama products to test themselves against other promising young players. “We have competed against top academies, against high-level players, and against many who are internationals with their countries,” Etxeberria continued. “These opportunities always help the growth of young footballers.”
In total, 27 players from Bilbao Athletic and CD Basconia participated in the three matches that were held in England: Iru, Agirrezabala, Areso, Bernaola, Vivian, Luengo, Murua, Paredes, Álvaro Núñez, Lorente, Rojo, García de Albeniz , Vencedor, Baqué, Víctor San Bartolomé, Salado, Zarraga, Prados, Unai Naveira, Artola, Morcillo, Asier Córdoba, Jon and Gorka Guruzeta, Tascón, Cabo, and Urain.
Bilbao Athletic will be back in action next Wednesday as they host Haro Deportivo at Lezama, while Basconia will travel to Sodupe on Sunday.
