Athletic Turn Down Alavés Request To Sign Mikel Vesga On Loan
Mikel Vesga isn’t going anywhere. Despite being practically unused at the start of the season, the midfielder has become an important player for Gaizka Garitano over the past month. Vesga has started Athletic’s last two games, against Real Madrid and Sevilla, and could be rewarded with even more opportunities going forward.
There had been rumors of Vesga possibly leaving on loan in the January transfer window but Garitano has ruled out an exit. “None of those who are playing will leave this month,” answered the manager when asked about Vesga’s situation after last weekend’s draw against Sevilla. So far Garitano’s statements have proven true.
Two weeks ago Leganés reported requested to sign Vesga on loan and were rejected. Since then Alavés have also reached out to Athletic and had an offer turned down, per Javier Lekuona of AS. Only time will tell whether or not Mikel Vesga will continue enjoying minutes but the midfielder has shown that he can contribute at Athletic and play an important role in the team.
