Foreign Clubs Join The Race To Sign Cristian Ganea On Loan

Cristian Ganea’s move from Viitorul to Athletic hasn’t panned out in the way the Romanian had hoped. When the Basques finalized the deal for Ganea in January of 2018 the club elected for him to finish the season with Viitorul. The left-back was finally presented as an Athletic player at the end of May, but would immediately be eclipsed by the signing of Yuri Berchiche.

The arrival of Berchiche, and Mikel Balenziaga continuing as the backup, meant that Ganea’s chances would be few and far between. In reality, minutes have been practically non-existent. Ganea made just two appearances for Athletic last season before joining Numancia on loan in the winter market and has yet to even be called up for a match since returning.

Gaizka Garitano made it clear over the summer that Ganea wasn’t part of his plans and that the Romanian would need to leave in order to have minutes. A few clubs from the Segunda showed interest but a move never happened due to financial restrictions as well as Ganea turning down offers from foreign clubs in hopes of staying and convincing the manager.

With the January transfer window now open it seems like only a matter of time before Ganea departs Athletic. The 27-year-old was recently linked with a move to Albacete on loan but since then several other clubs have expressed interest. According to an exclusive report from Javier Ortiz De Lazcano of El Correo, Real Oviedo and Tenerife have also joined the race to sign Ganea.

As expected, foreign clubs continue to express interest in Ganea as well. The report goes on to reveal that Sturn Graz from Austria and Apoel Nicosia of Cyprus are weighing up the possibility of signing Ganea on loan. At this point, no club has officially contacted Athletic to begin the process of negotiating a transfer.

Over the summer Ganea was adamant that he wanted to stay at Athletic and try to convince Garitano, but that hasn’t happened. If the 27-year-old truly wants to earn a place at Athletic he will have to leave on loan to prove himself. Cristian Ganea has accepted this reality and his representatives are actively working to find the best destination for the remainder of the season.
