Dani García “If We Continue Like This We Will Have The Points To Be In Europe”
Dani García has played every single minute so far this season and was instrumental once again as Athletic secured a 1-1 draw against Sevilla on Friday night. With that result the Lions have managed to take points away from the Santiago Bernabéu and Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán in consecutive matches when many believed that Athletic likely wouldn’t earn anything.
“People took these points for loss,” Dani García told reporters after the game. “The important thing is to compete and if we compete we are close to victory. We can be happy with the result, but it’s a shame because we saw the three points and left with a draw because they were able to create a chance. The point is valuable and we can top it off at home against Celta.”
Athletic once again fielded a formation with three center-backs, though Garitano made it clear after the game that it won’t be a regular occurrence. “We are also reliable with four defenders and have been one of the teams to concede the fewest goals in the league, although we can have security with three center-backs as well,” said García when asked about the lineup. “We didn’t allow any clear chance except for the one that led to Núñez’s misfortune.”
For the second straight game García was partnered in the midfield by Mikel Vesga and the two have played well together. Above all else, García is happy to be playing so much and says he can perform his best no matter who is beside him. “The important thing is to play and there are many great midfielders at Athletic. I feel comfortable playing with each one of them.”
Athletic have now reached the midpoint of the season on pace for 58 points which, in most seasons, has been enough to qualify for Europe. “We have 29 points and that is very good in such a close league,” García said with pride. “If we continue like this we will have the points to be in Europe.” The Zurigorri will have the opportunity to add three more points on 19 January when they host Celta Vigo at San Mamés.
