Iker Muniain Returns To Training
Being without both Iker Muniain and Aritz Aduriz has been a challenge for Athletic. The captain suffered a hamstring injury in late November while Aduriz has been sidelined since October with a hip injury of his own. Their absences have certainly been felt over the past few months and Gaizka Garitano has had to get creative when trying to replace their production. Thankfully, their returns are just around the corner.
Aduriz returned to normal training a week before Christmas and earlier this week reports suggested that he could be cleared to travel with the team to Sevilla on Friday. However, the striker then missed two days of training which bred new concerns. On Wednesday, Aduriz was back in the group for the first session of 2020 and that wasn’t the only good news at Lezama.
Muniain made his return to training on Wednesday as well which was the first time he’s worked with his teammates since injuring his hamstring on 20 November. The 27-year-old will not be available to face Sevilla, but could see his first minutes of the new year when the Lions travel to Las Llanas next weekend for a Copa del Rey match against Sestao River.
With Athletic currently sitting 7th in the La Liga table the returns of Iker Muniain and Aritz Aduriz will be a major boost for the team. Scoring goals continues to be the biggest issue for Garitano’s side and both players will make a huge impact in the final third, especially Muniain who has been the creative spark this season. Meanwhile, Oscar De Marcos will still be sidelined for a few months following recent ankle surgery.
