Yuri Berchiche Avoids Injury During Training
Athletic continued preparations for Friday’s trip to Sevilla with a training session today at Lezama where fans were welcome to come watch the players. The team returned from holiday break on Sunday and, with a relatively healthy squad available, Garitano will be able to field a very strong lineup at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán. One player did suffer a scare during Monday’s session but isn’t expected to miss the upcoming match.
During an exercise Yuri Berchiche went to the ground and needed immediate medical attention due to pain in his recently dislocated shoulder which has been an ongoing issue. Eventually, the left-back would return and finished the remainder of training without any issue. Barring any unforeseen change, Berchiche will play against Sevilla.
As expected, both Iker Muniain and Oscar De Marcos missed the session. Muniain is still recovering from a hamstring injury and has been working separately from the team with the goal of returning to the group very soon. On the other hand, De Marcos recently underwent surgery on his left ankle and will be sidelined for the next few months.
Curiously, Aritz Aduriz was missing from the session as well. The striker returned to training just before the holiday break after recovering from a hip injury and looked as though he could be cleared for Friday’s game. The club could simply be showing caution with the 38-year-old although the reason for his absence is unknown at this point.
Garitano once again called up youth players to train with the first team with Javier Murua joining the group. Dani Vivian continued to work with the senior squad as well. Neither are expected to travel to Seville, but could possibly be included in the squad for next weekend’s Copa del Rey match against Sestao River at Las Llanas.
