Athletic Club Boast La Liga’s Second-Best Record At Home During 2019
The past year has been an incredible time for Athletic when playing at San Mamés. Regarded as one of the most formidable stadiums in Europe, the Cathedral has once again been a fortress for the Lions who boast the second-best home record in 2019 among La Liga clubs.
Between last season and the current campaign, Athletic played 19 games at San Mamés in 2019 and suffered just one loss. The Zurigorri recorded 13 wins and 5 draws to secure 44 of a possible 57 points. Only Barcelona, who earned 53 points at Camp Nou, had better results at home over the past year. Behind Athletic, Atlético Madrid registered 43 points followed by Real Madrid with 42 points.
Attendance was also a massive success throughout the year with nearly 800,000 fans – 779,267 to be exact – coming to watch games at San Mamés. An average of 41,014 fans attended each match during 2019 with the highest number for a single fixture being 47,693 at the opening game of the season where Athletic defeated Barcelona 1-0 with a late bicycle kick from Aritz Aduriz.
Athletic Femenino enjoyed a special match at San Mamés in 2019 as well when they hosted Atlético Madrid in January. At the time, that game set the record for highest attendance for a Women’s football game in Spain at 48,121 and the Ladies will have the opportunity to better that number next month when they host Barcelona at the Cathedral.
After a very successful year there will be more to come in 2020 with San Mamés set to host a Bilbao Basket game against Barcelona in April. With Bilbao being one of eleven host cities for EURO 2020 the stadium will also host four matches for the tournament during the summer. Looking even further ahead, the plan is to make San Mamés available for Basque Sports Federations and as many as 20 Federations could call the Cathedral home by 2021 or possibly even sooner.
Since opening in 2013, the new San Mamés has been one of Europe’s most remarkable stadiums and even won the Sports Building of the Year Award in 2015. The stadium, which rests beautifully beside the waters of the Ria de Bilbao, is the heartbeat of the city and continues to provide strength to Athletic Club.
