Athletic Infantiles Finish 2nd In Aragon Cup And Torneo Asier Vega
The holiday break is always a great time for players to rest and recover, but is also presents an opportunity to play friendlies and stay competitive. For youth teams, tournaments are often held at this time and Athletic Infantil A once again participated in the Aragon Cup. The tournament began on Friday and ended on Sunday with the Kumeak finishing second with a loss in the final.
Victor Dura and Ander Honrado scored in the first game of the group stage to lead Athletic to a 2-0 win over Lacross Babel. In the second match, Athletic defeated CD Oliver 2-0 with goals from Iraitz Luaces and Kevin Mane to win the group and advance to the second round.
On Saturday, Athletic were first matched up against Real Zaragoza where goals from Iraitz Luaces, Adrián Pérez, and Guillen Atutxa lifted the Kumeak to a 3-1 victory. Oskar Alkorta’s side then booked their place in the final with a challenging 1-0 win over Celta Vigo as Kevin Mane scored the game’s only goal. Athletic would play the tournament final on Sunday where they would fall 4-0 to Valencia.
Athletic’s Infantil B team was also in action over the weekend as they participated in the Torneo Asier Vega. Miguel Ángel scored the only goal in a 1-0 win over Orioko followed by a 3-0 victory against Sámano with Ardaitz Villorejo, Ander Soravilla, and Mikel all finding the back of the net. The final game of the group stage ended in a scoreless draw with Basconia.
In the second round Mikel and Ardaitz both scored again to lead Athletic to a 2-0 win over Getxo before the Kumeak defeated Amorebieta 8-0 in the following match. Ander Peciña scored a hat trick, Oinatz added two goals, and Tomás, Soravilla, and Diego Fernández all contributed one goal as well.
Athletic defeated Baskonia 2-0 in the quarterfinals with Peciña scoring both goals followed by another 2-0 victory in the semifinals over Ostadar where Ardaitz netted a brace. In the end, Txema Añibarro’s side would lose the final 1-0 in a very close game against Eibar.
Despite the final defeats, the two teams played extremely well in the weekend tournaments and gained valuable experience competing against strong opponents. Both Infantil A and B currently sit at the top of their respective tables and will return to league play in January.
