Unai Vencedor Ready To Make First Team Debut
Unai Vencedor has been, without question, the best and most important player for Bilbao Athletic this season. The 19-year-old has played every minute for Joseba Etxeberria’s side so far and is on the cusp of making the step up to the first team. At this point, it’s only a matter of time before Vencedor makes his debut and that day may be just around the corner.
Etxeberria understands that, as manager of Bilbao Athletic, his ultimate goal is to prepare players for the first team and he believes that Vencedor is ready. According to a report from Javier Beltrán of El Correo, Etxeberria recently had a conversation with Vencedor, during which he told the young midfielder that he’s prepared to make his debut and to be ready when the call comes.
Many expected Vencedor to actually make his debut a few weeks ago in Athletic’s Copa del Rey match against Intercity. The starlet had trained with the first team in the buildup to the fixture but wasn’t included in the squad for the trip. Vencedor may finally have the opportunity on 11 January when Athletic travel to Las Llanas for the next round of the Cup where they will face neighbors Sestao River.
Vencedor was one of the stars of Athletic’s exceptional Juvenil A team of 2017/2018 and, like Oihan Sancet, was promoted straight to Bilbao Athletic two years ago. The Lezama product excels in a holding midfielder role where he is able to win back possession with interceptions, tackles, and excellent positioning. Vencedor is also an sensational passer with the ability to create chances for teammates and score from free kicks.
Last December, Unai Vencedor extended his contract with Athletic through 2023 which also raised his release clause to €40 million. The club sees a very bright future for the player who can run the midfield and control play and the expectation is that he will be promoted to the first team at the end of the season where he would then have the opportunity to fight for his place in the squad.
