Unai Núñez is a player in high demand. Unhappy with his limited chances at Athletic over the past year, the 22-year-old is seriously considering a future away from his boyhood club and will have suitors in January. Several clubs have been linked with a move for the defender and an exit will be possible if Núñez decides to leave.

According to a breaking report from Javier Beltrán of AS, West Ham have informed Athletic that they are willing to pay the defender’s €30 million release clause in January. While this isn’t a guarantee that Núñez will be leaving the club, the decision will ultimately be up to him.

Núñez has been in regular contact with close friend Pablo Fornals who joined West Ham in the summer with the midfielder trying to convince him to accept the offer. A move to West Ham would likely see Núñez become a regular starter which is his biggest desire at this point in his career. Making the switch to the Premier League is a real possibility for the defender, though there are other options to consider.

The report goes on to say that Bayern Munich are still very much in the running for Núñez and have even informed Athletic that they are willing to include Javi Martinez as part of a deal in January. Joining the German giants wouldn’t guarantee Núñez the minutes that he wants, but would allow him to compete for trophies every season with one of the biggest clubs in Europe. Núñez will take the coming days to make a decision.

Athletic are aware that retaining Núñez will be extremely difficult. The defender has been unwilling to sign a new contract due to his lack of opportunities and it would take a lot for the Basques to convince him to do so at this point. The Lezama product has been open about the fact that he wants to succeed at his boyhood club, but he also wants to play.

Qualifying for Europe has been seen as the key to persuading Núñez to stay. Doing so would guarantee the 22-year-old more minutes at Athletic Club next season, though there is a real possibility that he could leave San Mamés next month before Europe can be attained.
