Ibai Gómez “The Cup Will Be A Very Special Day For Me”
Ibai Gómez scored his first goal since returning to Athletic in Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Intercity. It was a long time coming for the winger who was expected to have more chances when he made the move from Alavés back in January. Despite the lack of minutes, Gómez is thrilled to be playing at San Mamés once again and is resolute in his efforts to earn more opportunities.
“I do not regret it,” Gómez told El Larguero when asked about his decision to return to Athletic. “I am in the team that I have supported all my life. It’s a pride and a pleasure to be here, I’m home. I can’t be happy with the amount of minutes, but I want to win. If I don’t play every minute it’s because I haven’t shown everything that I have to prove. I feel lucky to have health and the people I have around me. I feel very lucky. I can’t ask for much more than what I have.”
The 30-year-old could be named for the lineup in Sunday’s match against Real Madrid and says the team is determined to get a result in the difficult fixture. Madrid will be without several key players, including Casemiro, though Gómez recognizes that they have others to take their place.
“We are eager and have all the belief in the world to win at the Bernabéu. We know they are in a good dynamic, but we are confident. Casemiro is a key player. He’s played everything and he gives the balance that their team needs, but there are always others. It’s also true that (Fede) Valverde is playing at a spectacular level and can play in that position.”
In closing, Gómez shared his elation for Athletic being drawn against Sestao River in the second round of the Copa del Rey. The winger played for Sestao before joining Athletic in 2009 and is looking forward to the match which will be held at Las Llanas.
“We are very excited about the Cup. It’s still very early, but hopefully we can bring this title back to our fans who have been waiting so long. We have all been waiting for it. We know that we have to be very focused against Sestao. It will be a very special day for me, a very nice game.”
The Bizkaia Derby against Sestao River will be a historic match, but Athletic can’t afford to look too far ahead. Sunday’s trip to Madrid is the only thing that the players are focused on at the moment as Athletic will be looking to win their first game at the Santiago Bernabéu in 15 years. It won’t be easy, but the Zurigorri believe that can end the streak.
