Athletic Players Make Annual Christmas Trip To Visit With Children In Local Hospitals
Christmas is a special and magical time of the year, but it’s not as joyful for everyone. For children who have to spend the holidays in the hospital it can be a difficult time being away from home and not able to celebrate as usual. Because of this, it’s been a tradition for decades for Athletic players to visit local hospitals to give presents, share smiles, and spend time with the kids.
The tradition was carried on after Friday’s training session at San Mamés as players from the Men’s teams visited the IMQ, Cruces, and Basurto hospitals. The kids were excited to meet the players who had presents to give away such as signed shirts, posters, cards, and stuffed animals and wished them all a full and speedy recovery. Nurses and hospital staff who work in the Pediatrics Centers were also given presents and thanks for all they do for the kids.
Unai Simón, Cristian Ganea, Unai Núñez, Iñigo Martínez, Yeray, Mikel San José, Beñat, Unai López, Iñigo Córdoba, and Oihan Sancet visited Cruces Hospital while Dani García, Iñigo Lekue, Mikel Vesga, Yuri Berchiche, Ibai Gómez, Aritz Aduriz, Ander Capa, Kenan Kodro, Mikel Balenziaga, Iago Herrerín, Dani Vivian, Asier Villalibre, and Raúl García were at Basurto. Normally, the Women’s team also visits the hospitals but were unable to do so on Friday due traveling for Saturday’s game against Sporting Club.
Iñaki Williams and Iker Muniain visited IMQ where the club also donated shirts that had been tailored into hospital gowns for the children. The same was done weeks ago at Cruces and Basurto with the initiative now being brought to IMQ in partnership with the Osakidetza Foundation and Athletic Foundation.
