Athletic Club Draw Sestao River In The Second Round Of The Copa Del Rey
Athletic book their place in the second round of the Copa del Rey on Tuesday with a convincing 3-0 win over Intercity at Estadio Martínez Valero. The Lions spent the last few days waiting for the draw to take place for the next round knowing they would be matched up against a lower level team once again. However, there was a possibility for a Bizakia Derby which had fans very excited.
Barakaldo, Sestao River, and Portugalete all advanced to the second round and could have been drawn against Athletic on Friday for a historic match. The odds were low, but in the end Sestao River were the ones drawn against Athletic for the game which will be played on either 11 or 12 January.
Sestao River were originally Sestao Sport Club which was founded in 1916. Economic problems saw the club dissolved in 1996 and re-founded the same year as Sestao River which has enjoyed success in Spain’s Segunda B and Tercera divisions. This will be the first time that Athletic have played Sestao River since the relaunching of 1996. January’s fixture will also be special for Ibai Gómez who played for Sestao River before joining Athletic in 2009.
Athletic will have to travel to Las Llanas next month in what will surely be a sold out stadium. Having two local clubs face each other in the Copa del Rey will be great for Basque and Bizkaian football, though the most important thing for the Lions will be winning the match and continuing their search for a 25th Cup title.
