Beñat “I’m Happy With The Match I Played”
Beñat finally made his return from injury in Tuesday’s 3-0 win over Intercity and looked very strong at Estadio Martínez Valero. After missing nearly two months with an ankle injury the 32-year-old controlled the midfielder alongside Mikel Vesga and even scored Athletic’s second goal with an impressive shot from the top of the box.
“I’m leaving happy,” Beñat told Athletic TV after the match. “Apart from the goal the sensations were good. It took time to recover and you are always afraid of how you will find yourself. I found myself very well. I was comfortable with the ball and lucky enough to be able to score.”
Looking at the game, Beñat says that Athletic had to take it very seriously in order to ensure safe passage to the next round of the Copa del Rey. “We had to go out one hundred percent to avoid any mishap or anything like that. From the very beginning we went for the game and endured well in the first half. In the second half we clearly dominated the match.”
Being sidelined for so long wasn’t easy for the midfielder. “When you’re injured and have to stop the time goes by slowly and it can get into your head,” he admitted. “Then you are able to do things again but still have some discomfort and the coach trusts the players who have more rhythm. I’m happy with the match I played.”
Gaizka Garitano confirmed after Tuesday’s match that Beñat will be available for this weekend’s trip to Real Madrid. In fact, manager went as far to say that the team needs Beñat’s quality. While Unai López has seemingly overtaken Beñat in the starting lineup, the veteran will be an important option for the Mister with a challenging schedule of matches ahead.
