Oscar De Marcos Will See Specialist In Madrid To Assess Injured Ankle
Oscar De Marcos hasn’t been able to enjoy football this season. After featuring as the starting right-winger at the beginning of the campaign, the 30-year-old was sidelined with an ankle injury after just two games. De Marcos eventually returned to make another two appearances, but a second ankle issue has kept him out of training since early November with no signs of improvement.
With a lack of noticeable recovery being seen, Athletic are taking the next step to find a solution for the issue. The club announced on Sunday that De Marcos will see an ankle specialist in Madrid on Thursday to “assess the discomfort related to his left ankle”. The consultation will help decide the best course of recovery which could include arthroscopic surgery.
Athletic have been able to manage without De Marcos with Ander Capa blossoming into one of the league’s best right-backs, but the team will be in a difficult situation next weekend. The Lions will travel to Real Madrid without Capa, who will be suspended, leaving Iñigo Lekue as the option to replace him in the lineup. At this point there’s no way to gauge how much longer Oscar De Marcos will be on the sidelines but the hope is that Tuesday’s appointment in Madrid will offer some answers for the veteran.
