Joseba Etxeberria “Football Is Like This Sometimes”
Bilbao Athletic’s free fall from the top of the table continued on Saturday. The Kumeak fell 1-0 to Barakaldo at Lezama despite being the better side and are now in danger of dropping out of the top four. Manager Joseba Etxeberria admitted the team is in a bad run of results after the game, but refused to speak negatively of his players who did well despite the final score.
“Football is like this sometimes. We are in a bad dynamic of results and that makes it more difficult to see the success. I have nothing to reproach the players for. Not only did they attack well and often, but we minimized Barakaldo’s chances. They barely troubled us. We had many clear changes to tie the score. We had patience to mature the plays, which is a good thing for a young team. The normal thing is to have anxiety and anticipation.”
Throughout the opening months of the season Bilbao Athletic were arguably the best team in the Segunda B. However, Etxeberria highlighted the fact that the league is full of strong competition and that the Kumeak must work hard to climb back into the promotional playoff zone of the table.
“The dynamics are always changing. There is a lot of equality and in the last two defeats, against Leioa and this one, the team cannot be reproached. The players have emptied themselves but played with judgment. We can only insist on trying to reverse this situation in terms of results.”
Disappointing result aside, there was some good news as Andoni Tascón and Victor San Bartolomé were able to make their returns from injury. Etxeberria isn’t overly concern with the winless streak at the time and prefers to turn the focus to next weekend’s Derby.
“They (Tascón and Victor) have been able to play and accumulate minutes. Hopefully the dynamic in front of goal changes and the players who are returning will help us in the next games. The season is very long. The first thing is to recover from today’s effort, which demand a lot, and then prepare for Saturday’s game. It will be special playing against a strong team and rival. Then we will have Christmas to disconnect and wait for players to get healthy.”
Bilbao Athletic still sit just one point off of second place in the table and four off the top. Saturday’s trip to Real Sociedad will be one of the biggest games of the season and a big win could be just the thing to put the season back on track.
