Ander Capa Suspended For Athletic Club’s Next Match Against Real Madrid
Athletic had the opportunity to bounce back from last weekend’s loss to Real Betis when they hosted Eibar at San Mamés on Saturday. Every Basque Derby is a challenge but leaving with anything less than three points would be a disappointing result for the Lions. After a poor first half showing Athletic played much better in the final 45 minutes, but it wasn’t enough as the match ended in a scoreless draw.
With just one point in the last two games Athletic could fall as far as 8th in the La Liga table depending on the other matches over the weekend. Things won’t get any easier in the weeks ahead as the Basques will travel to Real Madrid and Sevilla in their next two league fixture and will have to make do without a key player at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday.
Ander Capa was shown a yellow card late in the game against Eibar which was his fifth of the season. The 27-year-old will now be suspended for the team’s next league game and won’t be able to travel with the squad to Madrid. Capa has been one of the best right-backs in La Liga this season and his absence won’t be easy to overcome.
Gaizka Garitano will have two options to replace Capa in the lineup against Real Madrid. Oscar De Marcos has been the team backup right-back since Capa overtook him as the starter. However, Iñigo Lekue has had the manager’s confidence over the past few months with De Marcos often left out of the squad entirely. Either could take the field at the Santiago Bernabéu on Sunday, but first Athletic must turn their attention to Tuesday’s Copa del Rey match against Intercity.
