Unai Vencedor Trains With The Athletic First Team And Could Make Debut Against Intercity
Athletic will begin their Copa del Rey campaign on Tuesday when they travel to Estadio Martínez Valero for a match against Intercity. Due to changes in the tournament format, there will only be one game instead of a home and away leg which means that there will be no room error if the Basques hope to make a deep run in the tournament. That being said, the Cup will be an opportunity to rest key players while giving others valuable minutes.
Gaizka Garitano will be allowed to call up as many as six youth players for the game against Intercity and at least one is expected to make the trip. Bilbao Athletic midfielder Unai Vencedor trained with the first team on Wednesday and could finally make his debut in the Cup match. It wasn’t the first time that the 19-year-old has worked with the first team and some even believe that he could be included in the squad for Saturday’s Basque Derby at San Mamés.
With only one game being played and no security of a second leg, Garitano will have to balance resting key players with fielding a team strong enough to guarantee a victory. Vencedor may very well make his debut, as could others, but players such as Iñigo Lekue, Mikel Balenziaga, Mikel Vesga, and Gaizka Larrazabal will also be expected to feature in the match which Athletic cannot afford to take lightly.
