Iñaki Williams “There Are No Excuses”
Athletic’s 3-2 loss to Real Betis was a massive disappointment for the Lions. After conceding three goals in the opening 20 minutes the Basques were able to get back into the game, but the equalizer proved too elusive. Iñaki Williams scored a penalty just before halftime to give the team energy though the striker was far more concerned with the result.
“There are no excuses,” Williams told reporters after the match. “We weren’t Athletic and we didn’t play our football. Betis were very superior in the first half. It was difficult to get into the game and they killed us. We tried to press after the break and had a good second half, but the start penalized us. We didn’t deserve to turn around the scoreboard.”
As a striker, Williams was happy to score a goal but said there was no reason to celebrate. The team is frustrated after the loss and must now turn their attention to Saturday’s Basque Derby against Eibar.
“It’s good for any forward to score goals, but the important thing was to get all three points. The goal was of no use and we are going home disappointed. There’s no time to lament. A beautiful Derby is coming and we have been very strong at home.”
The loss to Real Betis may have brought an end to Athletic’s five-game unbeaten streak, but the Zurigorri will have an opportunity to rebound from the defeat with a big win against Eibar next weekend. For now, Athletic sit 6th in the La Liga table with difficult fixtures ahead.
