International football is coming to Bilbao. As one of 11 host cities for EURO 2020, San Mamés will be the venue for a number of games throughout the tournament, including as many as three fixtures for the Spain National Team. The event will be incredible for the city as well as boost the recognition of both Bilbao and the stadium.

Spain have been drawn in a group with Poland, Sweden, and the playoff winner between Bosnia, Northern Ireland, Slovakia, and Ireland. In the buildup to EURO 2020, the Basque Football Federation are also hoping to take advantage of the tournament by scheduling a friendly to be played against one of Spain’s opponents in March.

According to a report from Alfonso Herrán of AS, the Basque Federation have already been in contact with both Poland and Sweden with both teams interested in the possibility of playing at San Mamés before the tournament begins. While there is nothing official at this point, the EFE are working hard to ensure that Euskal Selekzioa will be able to play a game very soon. The last friendly took place back in May when the team traveled to South America for a match against Panama.
