Jon Morcillo Prioritizing Athletic Renewal Over Offers From Other Clubs

Jon Morcillo has been something of a late bloomer. After spending time at the youth academies of Amorebieta and Cultural Durango, the winger finally caught the eyes of Athletic in 2016 when he was signed to CD Basconia. While never the most outstanding player with the Basauritarras, Morcillo made 68 appearances and scored 12 goals over two years before being promoted to Bilbao Athletic last season.

The first season with Bilbao Athletic was a learning experience. Morcillo trained under both Gaizka Garitano and Aritz Solabarrieta but was never able to gain the confidence of either manager. The winger scored just one goal in 15 appearances but has finally caught fire in his second season with the Kumeak.

Under the leadership of Joseba Etxeberria, Morcillo is playing the best football of his career. In just 15 appearances this season the 21-year-old has scored 7 goals and provided 4 assists while being one of the most important players in the team. Capable of creating chances with great passes and crosses or finishing from inside and outside the box, Morcillo has quickly become a very exciting prospect for Athletic.

Naturally, Morcillo’s incredible form has attracted attention from other clubs with Eibar, Malaga, and even some teams from England showing interest. Morcillo’s current contract with Athletic will expire in June if he isn’t promoted to the first team, but the Basque giants have no intention of losing the starlet.

According to an exclusive report from Javier Beltrán of El Correo, Athletic have already initiated renewal talks with Morcillo who has made it clear to the club that he wants to stay. Despite the potential offers from other clubs, Jon Morcillo is determined to reach the Athletic first team and dreams of playing at San Mamés. Both sides will continue negotiations moving forward and a renewal could be just around the corner.
