Unai López “San Mamés Must Be Our Fortress And It Has Been”
Unai López played what was arguably his best match in an Athletic shirt on Sunday as the Lions beat Granada 2-0 at San Mamés. Not only did the midfielder assist the team’s second goal, but he also contributed heavily in defense. After the game, Gaizka Garitano commended López for his fine performance, though the 24-year-old redirected the praise elsewhere.
“Our fans help us a lot at home,” López told Athletic TV. “It feels like we are playing with an extra player. San Mamés must be our fortress and it has been.” Athletic have the league’s best record at home this season, having won 6 fixtures while recording just one draw and loss each.
Sunday’s win was Athletic’s third in a row and saw the Lions extend their unbeaten streak to five games. “You are seeing the fruits of our everyday work,” said Iñigo Lekue. “We are a united team and it’s showing on the field. Now we have to think about preparing for Sunday’s game. We have to go to Seville to add another three points.”
Athletic will travel to the Benito Villamarín on Sunday for a match against Real Betis where another crucial three points will be on the line. The Basques moved to 4th in the La Liga table following the victory against Granada and are now just five points off the top.
