Raúl García Suspended For Athletic’s Next Match Against Real Betis
Raúl García was in danger of missing Sunday’s match against Granada. After suffering what appeared to be a groin injury in the win over Osasuna, the 33-year-old spent most of the week training separately from his teammates at Lezama. Tests confirmed that there was no muscle damage and every day García increased his workload until he was finally cleared to play. As expected, Rulo was named to the starting lineup and played a massive role in the win at San Mamés.
From the opening whistle it was clear that the pain was affecting García. Twice he was given the ball in the box and failed to make clean contact with his shots. However, as the game progressed the forward began to find his rhythm and was the one who opened the scoring for Athletic with a penalty kick.
With just nine minutes left to play Mikel San José walked up to the touchline to replace García but, before that could happen, a mistake was made. García committed an unnecessary foul in the midfield and was shown a yellow card. The booking was his fifth of the season which means that Raúl García will be suspended for Athletic’s trip to Real Betis next Sunday.
Raúl García was understandably frustrated about the booking. After taking his seat on the bench he was seen throwing a water bottle and shaking his head in anger. The challenge of replacing García won’t be easy and, with Iker Muniain also sidelined with a hamstring injury, Gaizka Garitano will have a big decision to make as Athletic hope to win their fourth straight game next weekend.
Moving forward, Ander Capa and Dani García are the current Athletic players in danger of suspension with both currently on four yellow cards while Iñigo Córdoba has three. All other players have been booked only two times or fewer.
