Copa Del Rey Match Between Athletic And Intercity Officially Moved To Estadio Martínez Valero
The opportunity to host Athletic at Polideportivo San Joan would have been historic for Intercity. Drawn against the Basque giants in the next round of the Copa del Rey, Intercity have spent the past few days undergoing examinations by the Spanish Federation to determine whether or not their stadium met all the qualifications to serve as the venue. In the end, the RFEF have ruled that the game would have to be relocated.
With concerns over seating capacity, lighting, smaller field dimensions, and the artificial turf conditions, the Spanish Federation did not approve the Polideportivo San Joan as an appropriate venue to host Copa del Rey matches. Intercity officially announced the ruling on Thursday afternoon and also revealed that the new location has already been determined.
The match between Athletic and Intercity will take place on 17 December at 9:00pm at Elche’s Estadio Martínez Valero. Intercity have also announced that they will offer transportation for fans looking to make the 25 minute trip to Elche. Intercity may have missed out on the chance to host a Primera club at their own stadium but will still be able to play the game against Athletic close to home.
