Athletic’s Copa Del Rey Match Against Intercity Could Be Moved To Elche
When Intercity drew Athletic in the next round of the Copa del Rey it was a historic moment for the club. In what is just their third season as a club, Intercity currently compete in the Tercera and know that playing a game against Athletic will draw a huge crowd. As the smaller side, Intercity will be the ones to host the fixture though there have been growing concerns over the venue.
“It’s a milestone for the history of our people,” said Intercity president Salvador Martí in a recent interview with Onda Vasca. “We have to enjoy it in our town. It will be a party for San Joan to host one of the best teams and we want to experience it at home.” While the Alicante-based club have been adamant about playing their game at their own stadium it may now be out of their hands.
Ahead of the match, which is scheduled for 18 December, the Spanish Federation visited Polideportivo San Joan for an examination of the venue just a few days ago. Lighting, field conditions, and seating capacity were all concerns that were analyzed as well as other factors pertaining to the ability for the match to the televised. According to a report from David Esteve of AS, Intercity passed the first test.
However, the Federation has yet to give approval for the game to be played at Polideportivo San Joan. With an artificial turf field of smaller dimensions than a standard pitch, there is growing concern that the fixture will have to be relocated. In fact, Jose Manuel Monje of Onda Vasca has since reported that if Intercity aren’t given approval by Friday the match will be officially moved.
If a relocation is required, Monje reports that the game would almost certainly be played in Elche which is just 25 minutes south-west of Alicante. Intercity have already spoken with Elche CF about using Estadio Martínez Valero as the venue which is expected to be the case if needed. For now, Intercity are still hopeful that they will be able to host the Copa del Rey fixture against Athletic but are starting to run out of time to get approval from the Spanish Federation.
