Gorka Guruzeta Scores In Athletic U23’s 1-1 Draw With Wolves
After suffering a 1-0 defeat against PSG last month in the opening match of the Premier League International Cup, Athletic’s U23 team was back in action on Wednesday. The Kumeak, led by Joseba Etxeberria, traveled to St George’s Park where they faced off with Wolverhampton Wanderers in what was a thrilling match for both sides.
Wolves opened up the scoring after just three minutes and had an opportunity to double their lead moments later when a penalty was awarded. Impressively, Ander Iru was able to make the save and Athletic began to take the initiative. Asier Córdoba would have a shot saved before Antonio Salado hit the post as the first half came to a close with the Basques still behind.
Coming out of the break, Athletic took control of the match. Gorka Guruzeta, who was making his first official appearance since recovering from ACL surgery, nearly scored the equalizer but sent a header just over the crossbar. Álvaro Núñez then put the ball in the back of the net just minutes later, though the flag was up for offside. However, the Kumeak wouldn’t be denied for long.
Núñez would find Guruzeta in the box with a nice pass just before the hour mark and the striker wouldn’t waste the opportunity. Guruzeta beat the goalkeeper with a low shot to level the score which would hold until the final whistle. Wednesday’s draw earned Athletic their first point of the group stage and the Kumeak will be back in action on 8 January for the third and final match against Liverpool.
