Carmelo Cedrún “I’m Happy For Iñaki Williams For Surpassing My Record”
Iñaki Williams made history over the weekend when he played his 133rd consecutive game in La Liga. The striker surpassed legendary goalkeeper Carmelo Cedrún for the most consecutive league games in Athletic history and hopes the streak will continue for a long time. Cedrún’s record had stood for over 50 years but, as he says, everything eventually comes to an end.
“In the past we had to play the entire game,” Cedrún remarked in an interview with Alfonso Herrán of AS. “There were no substitutions so it’s easier to reach those figures now. I was never injured. I was proud and was respected. I didn’t want anyone to take my place. For me it’s a great joy that a young man can achieve this. Hopefully he will play another 133 in a row!”
Cedrún was the starting goalkeeper at Athletic from 1952 until 1963 when he eventually lost his place to another future legend in José Ángel Iribar. His record may have come to an end, but Cedrún isn’t unhappy about it. “What are you going to do,” he asked laughing. “Sooner or later I had to fall, but I didn’t remember the record until a journalist reminded me. Iñaki is very nice and I congratulate him because it’s an honor. I’m happy for him for surpassing my record.”
While Cedrún, now 88 years old, hopes that the new record will be extended far longer, he also reminded Williams that it won’t last forever. “One day it ends and it’s over,” he said offering words of wisdom. “Everything has an end. In my case it was practically my goodbye to Athletic. In his case, he has a long career ahead. I hope he plays many more and scores many goals. It’s very nice to see and hopefully two or three more will have the opportunity to play so many consecutive games.”
Williams will now turn his attention to the all-time La Liga record currently held by former Real Sociedad defender Juan Antonio Larrañaga who made 202 consecutive appearances. In an age where it’s normal for players to be rested and nearly impossible to avoid injuries over a long period of time, what Iñaki Williams has achieved is truly remarkable and Carmelo Cedrún is happy to see the striker surpass him in the annals of Athletic Club history.
