Gaizka Garitano And Jagoba Arrasate Share Dinner Ahead Of Sunday’s Basque Derby
Basque football is unlike anything else in the world. While there may be several rivalries in the area, clubs have been unified in their commitment to Basque football and interconnected through their histories and the way of life in Euskal Herria. From the lower levels up to the top clubs there’s always been a unique Camaraderie among the players, coaches, and especially the fans.
This special bond and respect was on display Friday night as Athletic manager Gaizka Garitano, Eibar manager José Luis Mendilibar, Alavés manager Asier Garitano, and Osasuna manager Jagoba Arrasate were all seen having dinner together with the four set to face each other in two Basque Derbies on Sunday.
“It was an already scheduled dinner by Peña de Manix,” Arrasate revealed in Saturday’s pregame press conference. The Eibar Peña had invited all of the Basque managers to the dinner but Real Sociedad’s Imanol Alguacil was unable to attend due to the fact that his team was already in Madrid ahead of their match on Saturday. “We were all four there talking about everything but football,” Arrasate concluded.
It’s very uncommon to see rival coaches sharing a meal together and even more rare for it to happen just two days before a match. However, like the clubs, these four managers are interconnected and all have a personal relationship with one another. The fans of the clubs proudly shared the images across social media, once again showing the special bond and unity present in Basque football.
