Iker Muniain Sidelined Until January With Hamstring Injury
Sunday’s Basque Derby between Athletic and Osasuna could very well be one of the biggest games of the season. Not only will both sides be looking to take all three points and continue climbing the table, but there’s an added aspect with Osasuna having gone 31 straight matches at home without a loss. Athletic want to end that streak at El Sadar.
Getting a victory in Navarra will be difficult, but doing so without one of the team’s most important players is an even bigger challenge. Iker Muniain has played a key role for Athletic this season and will miss Sunday’s trip to Osasuna after suffering a hamstring injury during Wednesday’s training session at Lezama.
The captain felt discomfort in his left leg during an exercise and received immediate medical attention. Muniain was then helped off the field and down the stairs into the indoor facility while limping. Athletic soon released a medical report stating that Muniain has been diagnosed with a Grade II hamstring strain and will be sidelined until January.
On another note, Beñat continued to train normally on Wednesday and Unai Núñez was able to rejoin the group as well. Oscar De Marcos, Aritz Aduriz, Gorka Guruzeta continued to work separately and have been ruled out for Sunday’s match. With Iker Muniain set to miss the Derby there will be a big hole in the lineup which leaves Gaizka Garitano with a difficult decision to make.
