Intercity Have No Plans To Host Copa Del Rey Match Against Athletic In A Larger Stadium
The new format for the Copa del Rey has many fans excited. Instead of every round being played over two legs, there will be one-game eliminations until the semifinals. The lone game each round will be played at the stadium of the smaller club in hopes of adding more equality throughout the tournament.
Athletic will begin their Copa del Rey campaign in just one month and will be traveling to Polideportivo San Joan for a match against Intercity. “It’s a milestone for the history of our people,” said Intercity President Salvador Martí in an interview with Onda Vasca. Intercity are in their third season as a football club and have enjoyed two consecutive promotions.
Currently playing in Spain’s Tercera, Intercity’s Polideportivo San Joan is a very small venue. There has been concern over whether or not it would be able to host a match against a club the size of Athletic but there are no plans to relocate the game. “We have to enjoy it in our town,” said Martí when asked about possible moving the venue. “It will be a party for San Joan to host one of the best teams and we want to experience it at home.
In addition, Intercity are hoping to make an entire day out of the match with a large event. “It’s still too soon to say something, but we want to organize a great event that will serve as a fraternization between the two groups of fans,” Martí continued. “Alicante is a province outside of Euskadi but there are many Athletic fans. We will try to have the greatest possible capacity.”
Martí would go on to explain that Intercity are still growing and that the club has enjoyed unbelievable success in the first three years. “We are in the process of converting into a corporation and we want to go public in two months. We have only experienced beautiful things in football. This is our third season and we are still far from where we want to go.”
The President confirmed that the price of tickets for the match against Athletic will cost between €20 and €30 and that Intercity have already received €28,000 for being at this stage of the tournament. If Intercity manage to eliminate Athletic they would receive an additional €35,000. “We count on it, we need it,” Martí said about the prize money with a laugh.
The match between Athletic and Intercity has yet to be scheduled but will be played between 17 and 19 December. Regardless of when the game is held, it will come after Athletic’s Basque Derby against Eibar at San Mamés and before the Lions visit the Santiago Bernabeu just days prior to Christmas. The draw for the next round of the Copa del Rey will be held on 20 December.
