Athletic Juvenil A Cruise To 3-1 Win Over Real Sociedad At Lezama

Juvenil A celebrate one of Iñigo López’s goals against Real Sociedad (ZF)

Athletic’s Juvenil A team have had an extraordinary year so far. Led by manager Imanol de la Sota, as well as several promising starlets, the Kumeak have been dominant but faced one of the biggest tests of the season on Saturday when they hosted Real Sociedad at Lezama. The rivalry always makes this an important match, but there was added pressure as Athletic needed a positive result to protect their place at the top of the table.

Just two minutes after the opening whistle, Real Sociedad had taken the lead. It was a shocking start to the game but going behind early didn’t phase Athletic. The Kumeak immediately began looking for an equalizer and would finally find it through a great play by Nico Williams. The winger put a nice shot off the crossbar and striker Iñigo López was in position to put the rebound into the back of the net.

Williams was a constant threat and would hit the post a second time in the opening 45 minutes while Nico Serrano had a goal called back for offside. Athletic were unable to take the lead before the end of the first half, but wouldn’t be denied forever. After the break, Iñigo López beat the keeper again to make it 2-1 before Mikel López, his replacement, scored a third goal to seal a 3-1 victory.

The win over Real Sociedad moved Athletic to 25 points on the season and allowed the De La Sota’s side to retain their place at the top of the table. Osasuna, who currently sit on 22 points, will be in action Sunday but are unlikely to overtake Athletic who have a much higher goal difference. Juvenil A will be back in action on Saturday when they travel to Valvanera.
