Mikel San José Returns To Training, Oihan Sancet Remains Sidelined

Mikel San Jose Training

After enjoying the day off on Tuesday, Athletic were back in training on Wednesday at Lezama. Gaizka Garitano is currently getting the team ready for a friendly against Eibar on Friday, after which the Lions will turn their full attention to next weekend’s trip to El Sadar. Thankfully, there was a bit of good news for the squad as Mikel San José made his return to training.

The midfielder had suffered a sprained ankle during Monday’s training after falling awkwardly while trying to win a header. There wasn’t much concern over the issue, but San José did have to leave for the rest of the session. Oihan Sancet was also injured on Monday when he fell on a peg in the ground and cut his right knee. Sancet had to be helped off the field and was unable to return on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Beñat was seen working on the sidelines apart from the group. The 32-year-old is still recovering from a Grade II ankle sprain and could make his return against Osasuna, though it’s still uncertain at this point. Aritz Aduriz, who is dealing with a hip injury, wasn’t present at training either. Lastly, Yuri Berchiche was kept out of specific exercises with the club being cautious about the defender’s ongoing shoulder pain.

Athletic will be back in training on Thursday before hosting Eibar at Lezama on Friday. The Lions currently sit 6th in the La Liga table with 20 points but will be facing another challenging stretch of matches once the international break comes to an end.
