Oihan Sancet Leaves Training With Knee Injury
Athletic were back in training on Monday following a thrilling 2-1 win over Levante less than 24 hours earlier. With the international break now underway, the players will have the next two weeks to prepare for the upcoming Basque Derby against Osasuna at El Sadar. Spirits were high during Monday’s session but two injury scares changed the mood.
After a challenge from Unai Núñez, Oihan Sancet fell on a peg that was being used to divide the training field into sections. The midfielder immediately screamed in pain which alerted Doctor Josean Lekue and assistant Juanma Ipiña who rushed out to provide medical treatment. Sancet had sustained a large cut on his right knee and was helped inside for further attention for the rest of training.
The club has yet to provide a medical update on Sancet and whether or not his cut will require stitches. For now it doesn’t appear to be a serious injury and the 19-year-old will have the international break to recover, however he is expected to continue playing with Bilbao Athletic during the stoppage if cleared.
Meanwhile, Mikel San José suffered a sprained ankle during the same session during a challenge with Asier Villalibre. The midfielder was unable to continue and will undergo further tests to determine the extent of the injury and whether or not he will be available for the trip to El Sadar in two weeks.
Aritz Aduriz and Beñat could make their returns against Osasuna, though it’s not certain at this point. The striker suffered a hip injury during Saturday’s training and Beñat is still nursing a sprained ankle. The pair will be following individualized training plans over the next 10 days as will Yuri Berchiche who is dealing with ongoing pain following a dislocated right shoulder over a month ago. The left-back could undergo surgery on the shoulder at the end of the season if there is no improvement.
The players will have the day off on Tuesday but will be back in training on Wednesday and Thursday. Athletic will then host Eibar at Lezama on Friday for a friendly before fully turning their attention to Osasuna.
