Ander Capa “I Really Wanted To Celebrate A Goal At San Mamés”
Ander Capa was the hero for Athletic on Sunday. Not only did the right-back provide the assist that leveled the score early in the second half, he also scored a late volley which sealed the victory for the Lions. Capa’s first goal with Athletic couldn’t have come at a better time and the 27-year-old couldn’t hide his excitement when speaking with Athletic TV after the game.
“The goal was a surprise. I saw how the ball was coming and I hit it without even thinking. I just hit it with everything and thought ‘whatever God wants’. With the assist, the goal, and the victory I couldn’t be happier. I really wanted to celebrate a goal at San Mamés with our fans. I’m very happy. I had a lot of emotions. I didn’t know what to do or where to celebrate it.”
Athletic were the better team from start to finish, but conceding the first goal made things very difficult. Capa acknowledged that the Lions had to overcome adversity but shared that the team was fully confident of being able to complete the comeback.
“It was complicated. We were playing our game, doing what we wanted, and suddenly they scored their goal. It changed everything. After the break we went out with another mentality because we had to equalize quickly to get back into the game and that’s what happened. We remained calm and achieved the comeback, which was something we haven’t been able to do.”
Sunday’s win saw Athletic climb to 6th in the La Liga table and the Zurigorri will now have the international break to prepare for the upcoming Basque Derby against Osasuna. “When things are going well the break isn’t good,” Capa explained. “We want to keep playing and build on this result.” Athletic may be in fantastic form at the moment, but El Sadar will prove to be yet another massive challenge.
