Unai López Returns To Training
Gaizka Garitano had a big decision to make heading into Sunday’s trip to Villarreal. With Unai López and Beñat both sidelined with injuries, the Mister had to choose a new midfield partner for Dani García. As expected, Garitano put his faith in the most veteran option, Mikel San José, who played well before being taken off for Mikel Vesga in the second half.
Athletic will play one more game before the international break but Garitano won’t be in the same difficult situation. Unai López returned to training on Monday at Lezama and exercised normally with the group. According to sources the 24-year-old has already been cleared to play this weekend and, barring any unforeseen setbacks, will be in the starting lineup against Levante on Sunday at San Mamés.
Unfortunately, Athletic will still be without Beñat. The midfielder is recovering from a Grade II ankle sprain and could make his return after the international break. Garitano is expected to have the rest of the squad available as the Basques look to pick up another important three points in hopes of jumping into the European zone of the table before the two week break.
