One of the most common words used to describe Athletic is Family. Throughout history fathers, sons, brothers, cousins, and the like have represented the club on multiple occasions, often sharing the field at times. However, it’s been rare that family members actually score in the same game and get to celebrate goals together.

The feat has only happened three times for the first team. Over a century ago the Belauste brothers scored in the same game while the Arieta brothers (Eneko and Antón) did so twice in matches against Las Palmas and Ferencvaros. The special occurrence has never happened for Bilbao Athletic, but on Sunday history was made with CD Basconia.

Older brother Xabier Naveira scored in the 46th minute of Basconia’s match against Sestao River to level the score at 1-1. Just 12 minutes later, younger brother Unai Naveira would also find the back of the net. In the end, they were unable to win the match but it will go down in history as the first time two brothers have scored in the same game for Basconia since the club became a subsidiary of Athletic, according to @athletictxistu.

To make the moment even more special, the brothers are from Sestao and accomplished the rare feat against hometown Sestao River Club. The picture, captured by Unai Zabaleta, will long be cherished by the brothers who celebrated the historic goals together as a family.
