Yeray “Our Goalkeeper Was Amazing”
Athletic’s impressive defense was on display once again as the Basques held Villarreal to a scoreless draw on Sunday at Estadio de la Cerámica. Despite the strong performance from the back line, Unai Simón still had to make four truly amazing saves to keep the hosts from finding the back of the net. As expected, the team was full of praise for the 22-year-old after the match.
“Our goalkeeper was amazing,” Yeray told Athletic TV. “We helped him with what we could. We knew they fed on those turnovers, those mistakes, because they have a lot of speed. They created chances with mismatches, but during the game I think we were well positioned.”
The defender went on to share that the though the result was just considering that both sides had chances to score and played well. “It was a very even match in which both teams had chances to take the three points. We had a few opportunities from set pieces. In the end, I think a draw is a fair result for both teams.”
Likewise, Mikel San José celebrated Simón’s excellent performance. “Unai made great saves,” the midfielder said. “It was an intense game. They are very strong at home and have scored a lot of goals throughout the league. It was very hard for both teams. We both had clear chances to score.”
San José was making his first start of the season and also thought a draw was the right result based on how both sides played. “The result was fair. We demanded a lot from Villarreal, they suffered, and we leave with a good taste in our mouths. We hope to take the points in the next match.” That next match will take place on Sunday as Athletic host Levante at San Mamés.
