Mikel Vesga Impresses With Second Half Performance Against Villarreal
Mikel Vesga has struggled to take his game to the next level since being promoted to the Athletic first team back in 2016. Despite playing very well during loan spells with Sporting and Leganes, the midfielder just hasn’t been able to replicate the same success at San Mames. However, during Sunday’s draw with Villarreal Vesga showed signs that he could still have a future with Athletic.
With just under half an hour left to play at Estadio de la Cerámica, Vesga was brought on for Mikel San José and put in an impressive shift alongside Dani García. The 26-year-old was strong in defense, exceptional with his positioning, and even pushed the ball forward with nice passes in the final third. Vesga was very composed with and without the ball, and confident as well, in what could arguably be one of his best performances in an Athletic shirt.
While it’s always difficult to draw any conclusions from a 24 minute spell in the second half of a match, there is reason to be optimistic about Vesga after his game against Villarreal. The midfielder has always shown the traits needed to be a successful pivot and there is still belief that he could finally realize his potential with the Basque giants.
The match against Villarreal was just the second appearance of the season for Vesga who knows that his chances will be few and far between. However, with the futures of San José and Beñat very much in question, the midfielder could soon be in a position to earn a more important role in the team. Mikel Vesga is under contract through 2021 but must continue to make the most of his minutes in order to convince the club that he deserves a renewal.
