Bilbao Athletic 3-1 Logroñés: No Stopping The Kumeak
Bilbao Athletic start to the season has been nothing short of extraordinary. Joseba Etxeberria preached intensity, pressing, organization, balance, and fast attacking throughout the preseason and the team has fully grasped the concepts of the new manger. Through the opening 10 games of the campaign Bilbao Athletic scored 28 goals and sat atop the table heading into Sunday’s match.
It wouldn’t be just any other game at Lezama. Logroñés, who entered the weekend level on points with the Cachorros, were visiting which made this one of the most important games of the season. True to recent form, Bilbao Athletic were absolutely dominant and imposed their football on the league’s second-placed team.
Ewan Urain opened up the scoring just 21 minutes into the match from a corner kick. Logroñés tried to clear the cross but the striker was there to volley a shot into the back of the net. It was the third straight game in which the 19-year-old has scored a goal, but he would be forced to leave the field minutes later after feeling muscle discomfort in his leg. Iñigo Baqué would take his place leading the attack.
The half ended with Bilbao Athletic up 1-0 but the real fireworks came after the break. Ten minutes after play resumed, Jon Morcillo would beat two defenders with sublime dribbling before tucking a low shot into the near post to double the lead. Oihan Sancet would then make it 3-0 in the 67th minute after settling a pass in the box from Imanol García de Albéniz. The midfielder put the ball on his strong foot and blasted a shot past the goalkeeper.
Logroñés would eventually pull a goal back a few minutes later with a very nice counter attack, but it was too late for the visitors to get back into the game. Juan Artola, Sancet, and Morcillo all had chances to add more goals as Bilbao Athletic looked certain to score every time they attacked. The match ended 3-1 which saw the Kumeak take sole command at the top of the table with yet another impressive result that shows this team is on a completely different level at the moment.
