Athletic Target Javi Martinez Not Expected To Leave Bayern Munich Until The Summer
Athletic’s interest in signing Bayern Munich’s Javi Martinez isn’t going away. In fact, it’s growing every day. The Lions are determined to bring the 31-year-old back to San Mamés and it may only be a matter of time until that happens. Martinez knows that he isn’t a part of the plans at Bayern and is expected to leave the club by next summer before entering the final year of his contract.
Over the past week, sources in Germany have linked Martinez with a return to Athletic in the upcoming January transfer window. Bayern are said to be willing to include the midfielder as part of a bid to sign Athletic defender Unai Núñez, however if that doesn’t happen the Lions will have to wait until the summer to reach an agreement.
According to a report from Javier Ortiz de Lazcano of El Correo, Athletic have not been in contact with Javi Martinez nor the player’s representatives. Bayern Munich are also unwilling to part with the midfielder in the middle of the season unless they can bring in a replacement considering the fact that both Lucas Hernandez and Niklas Süle are injured at the moment. Although things can always change quickly in football, no one expects Martinez to leave Bayern in January.
Once the season comes to an end Bayern will look to offload the 31-year-old. Martinez has made just seven appearances this season, accumulating a meager 266 minutes, and is unhappy with his lack of chances. The midfielder has already stated publicly that he would like to return to Athletic and is likely to get his wish, but unless something changes the Zurigorri will have to wait until the summer for the long awaited reunion.
