Iker Muniain “It Was A Beautiful Night”
Iker Muniain was the hero on Wednesday night, scoring two goals to lead Athletic to a 3-0 win over Espanyol. The captain could have had a hat-trick but the third was credited as an own goal. Naturally, the players were in good spirits after the game and Muniain told reporters that it was necessary to put an end to the five-game winless streak.
“Let’s fight for it and see if they give it.”, Muniain joked about credited with the third goal. “I put my foot in and hit the ball strong, but it’s also true that the defender touched it too. I’m very happy for the game and for getting the three points that we needed to end the streak, which was very important. It was a good game, a great response from the fans, and ultimately a beautiful night. Thank you to everyone who came out to support us.”
The 26-year-old went on to explain that he believes the team played well during the past month, but were lacking the goals needed to win games. Wednesday’s victory came at a very important time with difficult games ahead.
“We had been starting games well lately but without the luck of scoring goals. Today we were able to score quickly and press with intensity which dictated the dynamics of the match. We managed to dominate the game. In the second half they forced us to retreat but it was a great victory that helps us move up the table. There’s nothing better. Now it’s time to rest because there’s another game on Sunday.”
The win over Espanyol will go a long way in building Athletic’s confidence as the Lions look to move back into the European zone of the table. Garitano must now get the team ready for Sunday’s trip to Estadio de la Cerámica where the Basques will face off with Villarreal in what will be yet another challenging fixture.
