Gaizka Garitano Has Been Testing A Formation With Three Center-Backs During Training
Athletic’s drop in form over the past month has been concerning. The Lions have managed just two points during their last five games and have fallen out of the European zone of the table. Scoring goals has been the biggest issue for the team which has left Gaizka Garitano searching for answers. Encouragingly, the Mister may have found a solution.
Following Saturday’s loss to Atlético Madrid, Garitano has introduced some new ideas. Throughout the week Athletic spent some time working with three defenders instead of the tradition four which suggests that the Lions could alter the formation at some point. While a new formation isn’t guaranteed to fix the issues, it’s at least clear that Garitano is willing to entertain possible changes.
It’s uncertain if Athletic will be using a different formation in Wednesday’s match against Espanyol, but it does appear to be an option. Altering the lineup in this way would not only afford Unai Núñez a starting role, but would also give Yuri Berchiche and Ander Capa more freedom to attack. Iker Muniain would theoretically play more centrally as well which is where he has been his most creative and dangerous.
Historically, Athletic haven’t been successful when playing with three center-backs, although that doesn’t mean it can never work well. Only time will tell if changing the formation will improve the results. Garitano may not even use the altered lineup but simply working on it during training shows that the manager is actively searching for answers.
